Rest & Waterfalls

We took a slow start to the day, with a later than usual breakfast. I’m enjoying the long weekend and no work, although I will need to some later on today.

After breakfast we just sort of hung out, watched the NRL Grand Final. Good game, wrong result.

In the late morning we worked up the energy to set off up the hill behind the hotel to a “Viewpoint”, as promised by the sign pointing that way. It was a day for our walking sticks. The hill rose steeply and the track was at times a stream, given all the rain and the fact that it doesn’t seem to soak in, mainly because the ground is already sodden.

The track climbed through a forested area with the sound of the stream off to our left rushing down the slope through the large granite boulders. We were able to glimpse a large waterfall that thundered down between a small race before plummiting to the depths below. There were also small waterfalls crossing our path.

At last we broke through the tree line to be rewarded with views back over the Loch to the township (village) of Torridon. The weather was overcast but only the occasional mizzle of rain.

There certainly was the promised “Viewpoint”. There was also another trail that verred off to the river that fed the waterfall. Kirsty was happy to sit and wait whilst I explored that trail and the river. I could have followed that thing for ever. It was magical. To be up above the tree line, with the vast open spaces of the Highlands stretching out made my heart sing. I may have even uttered a few four letters words at the top of my voice to express my joy. There was no one to hear…..which is the whole point really !!

We made it safely back down and shouted ourselves a beer and soup for a late lunch. Very nice. Back to our room for a further rest time. Kirsty took herself off to the lounge to write some postcards (for those of you old enough to know what they are). I had some work to do, and watch Europe demolish USA in the Ryder Cup.

We then took ourselves off to Shieldaig to the Coastal Kitchen & Bar. This is a VERY small village, but the restaurant was awesome. It was pizza night, the best pizza we have probably had, all made right in front of you as the place is so small. It felt like you were in someones home. I had mussels first up and Kirsty had Chowder. Needless to say we took away a doggy bag of left over pizza.
